Highroof campout 2014

At the end of June I organized a VW HIghroof gathering, the idea was a back to basic campout with a focus on the highroof. The goal was to get as many together in one field. Despite the number of owners putting their name down in joining us for the weekend, many send their cat.. I’m guessing the few hours rain we had was enough to keep them home.

Chantal and Matt’s beautiful farm is situated in the countryside on the outskirts of Maidenhead. It is the perfect setting for a relaxing weekend.

The program for the weekend was simple, come down, park up and enjoy

Nibbles and a lot of fun..

Not quite the turn out as hoped for.

Matt gettin’ dirty with the venison ๐Ÿ™‚

Yep, caught with an axe.. not really ๐Ÿ˜›

A generous and lovely spread..

Throwing and watching the glider.

We had rain saturday afternoon but were well prepared so the party continued..

and more chillin

The campfire was massive.

In the weeds..

Ssssht barndoor a sleep..

Laid back..

From Left to right:
Antony Bentley’s ’65 Panelvan, Matt & Chantall’s ’67 Clino mobil, my ’63 Portuguese 9 window & ’65 Portuguese 13 window, Lee’s ’64 Panelvan.

( the ’63 is now owned by Mike and Charlie Rutherford.)

Thanks all for coming down, hopefully again in 2016!

Special thanks to Mike Jonhson for the pictures.

Cruisin to the Breeze ’13

Beter late then never eh! ๐Ÿ™‚

Brighton Breeze, probably one of the best shows in the whole year.. Despite it being a 1 day show, over the years I’ve always come down on friday eve to enjoy the weekend as much as possible.

For some reason (probably being too tired ๐Ÿ™‚ ) I’ve only taken pics of the cruise down and not a single one at the show itself.. I guess it’s that show where you meet so many people and sort of say goodbye until you meet again somewhere early next year.

All I can say is that I had a superb time again.. I missed out on the saturday eve but that was because I had to go home bound for the delivery of my new baby girl ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyway I’ll let the pics do the talking..

Meeting up with the usual suspects.

A quick burger for Fi and Chez and we’re off..

Bobby driving the extremely low (static) PG/SG.. This is one lovely bus!!

Mr Faux in his supersonic Canada Dry DD panel.. ๐Ÿ™‚

The speed was rather boring for Scotty.. ย  lol

Rapid rodent racing going strong

Some cool drive by shots!

Driving in to the sunset..

The sunset was an absolute beauty of moment to drive into..

A bit of lame show report I know but as said BB is much more then just buses parked on the madeira drive.. ย Thanks to the SSVC for putting down a very good show again and most importantly thanks to Mr Smart and team for making it so successful.. Well done!!

See you next year!

Grill n Chill ’13

A bit of a late update on this show..

With good hopes we drove down to this show, I managed to convince the family as they gave a sunny forecast hence Lucy being due to give birth the same weekend .. !!!!
I’ve heard good things about this show so was looking forward to it but it didn’t last very long..
Yet again another show where you can see it’s all about money.. A lot of rubbish traders with the most un-usefull things and a mixed show and shine field ย ..
It’s such a shame that organisers don’t step up to create an air-cooled only event, having started a recent discussion on a well known VW forum I could hear a lot of similar frustrations and also a demand for aircooled only events!
I’ve plans to setup a few aircooled only shows so more info soon ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, apart from the little frustration I was verry happy to meet with friends and soon there was a very nice Splitscreen corner on the show.. In the end it’s the company that makes the show !!!

Lowie the lolly dude ๐Ÿ™‚ ready for a wander around..

It didn’t last very long and so he went through the bus to see what he could find to play with..

New trend maybe .. ?

The whole bus went upside down to the likes of myself.. ย  ย  ย errrmmm..

We arrived on saturday lunch time.. I think friday night was a good one .. ย  ย ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nice line up!

HAYBURNER represent!!

As is the Cool Flo gang.. They threw a wicked party on the saturday night, good times!!!

What a fantastic looking bus this is!!

Ludo, Ned’s dog, had bitten Lowie’s ball to pieces therefor Lowie received a cool trucker hat! Cheers Ned..

The program for the kids was very nice with some good storytelling and lot’s of activities around..

The show and shine field had all sorts of different cars to my frustration. However, some of the “vehicles” where well worth having a look at.

This airstream was in immaculate condition, a real beauty!!

The car on the right in this picture has some really nice accessories ..

De eyes of this viking had built in lights which I think is a cool feature at night.. ๐Ÿ™‚

The black rims on this early mango bus are a good choice, they really pop!

Tim’s “total chick car” was present and looking good as always! ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  The Fire bus looked mint!
The pinstriped Ghia done by seaside Neil is a work of art in itself!

There seems to be a trend for putting watercoolers on beetle pans.. this won’t go any lower! Great fun when you have too much time on your hands ย ๐Ÿ˜€

The tuxedo beetle.. ย  ย ?

Our camp!

BOOO ย  ๐Ÿ™‚

The dude and his bike! Soon it’ll be time for a real big boy’s bike without stabilisers..

Bagged OG paint splitty, one of my favorite colors.. Looked real nice.

Ned working on a new magazine these days ..

“Gay-Gurner” ย  ย ๐Ÿ˜€

Good luck Ned! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ned’s wife Vic, did her last show with the air-cooled bouncy castles. Lowie got some extra time/fun until he knackered himself down.. ๐Ÿ˜€ ย  Thx Vic!

The setup of this show is very nice but I’m just not a fan of seeing modern cars parked up next to our old classics.. a shame as this show has so much potential!!

Oh well until next time.. ๐Ÿ™‚

rApid rOdent rAcing!!

Where do I start eh..

Well let’s start with the beginning that’s the easiest way me thinks..

Chez and I met the first time back in 2008 when I did my “fear and loathing” trip in the UK, more specificly in Devon/Cornwall.
It was at a random roundabout somewhere near St-Yves that my mouth fell wide open when this amazing convoy of 3 รผber cool splits came driving past.. One of them was Chez in his well known army green Kemperink.

He made a good impression on me but somehow I lost contact with him over the years and for some reason my mind (fuzzy as f*ck these dayszz) couldn’t make the link with hippy Chez these days to the Chez from back then..

It was not until this summer when Chez and I found each other again as good friends and the trip to HO was a wicked one!!

A few weeks ago I realised Stella was in need of some serious TLC, she’s been such a great bus all the time and she get’s me all over Europe with hardly any complaints. The mileage on my speedo has increased enormously and you can really tell underneath the car.
So I phoned Mr RRR and his answer was ” Mate, the door is open for you any day any time”. He knows how to make me smile ๐Ÿ˜€

Now before I continue I want you to know that despite I like Chez very much I did not have a clue what to expect from his workshop or the man himself .. after all he’s a hippy right.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Rapid Rodent Racing is located in Souldrop (can it be more perfect ๐Ÿ™‚ ) near Bedford.

There are a few other garages on the same farm and the atmosphere is great, especially if you’re a petrol head like me. Having spent a week at RRR I can tell that there’s something different going on every day.. The guys on the farm are really cool too and are always there to help you out.
There’s (clean) toilets and even a hot shower (bugs included).ย

So when I said I wasn’t sure about what to expect from Chez.. Well he’s surprised me very much. He might not know it but I kept an eye on him to see what he’s all about and I have to say he’s the sort of guy you’d like to work on your car. He’s not the sort of mechanic who thinks he’s always right.. In fact when he’s not a 100% sure about a job he will go dig into books, the world wide web or even make a phone call just to be sure he’s making the right decision. Now that I like!! ๐Ÿ™‚
What makes a difference in a good mechanic is the fact when they’re looking for the cause of a problem/situation.. I’ve had a few conversations with Chez where I’ve put his “mayo” in action and it was great to see that he was thinking/trying to find out the problem..
Another great example is that when I explained Chez the brake issues I had he came with a different view opposite to all other people I’d spoken with.. and.. he was right too! Good Stuff..

Instead of replacing a potential failing master brake cylinder, Chez had a look at the settings of my rear brake shoes, adjusted them and went for a spin.. ย  (the problem, I had to pump the pedal ยฑ three times before I had any brake assistance at all, because the rear brake adjustment was so far out it created air in the pipes.. long live single circuit..)

A look around in the workshop and the first “thing” that catches my eye is Weener’s bus..

He’s bus is in for a straight axle conversion.. Not sure why he’s brought it over as I thought Ian could do these things himself.. my guess is he’s just plain lazy .. ๐Ÿ˜›
As you’ve probably noticed from the engine lid, he’s gone over to the darkside by replacing the aircooled VW lump with an Alfa Romeo Boxer lump.. Oh dear what have you done eh.. ๐Ÿ˜‰
Well at least it will be another bus on the road soon.. good luck with finishing it off buddy!

The 2nd vehicle that really pops in my eye is this Ferarri red kit car.. oh boy that thing looks fast as f***

It’s a road legal race car with an Audi Quatro turbo lump in.

Lucky me, Chez has decided to put Stella in the back of the workshop so this beast has to come out.. vrrrroam vrroooaaaaammmmmm.. ๐Ÿ˜€

What a machine.. !

The look on Chez’s face after a quick test drive say’s it all this thing is mad! ย  ย  ย  ย  (no hairspray needed after a little testdrive ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

There’s no job that Chez can’t do, in fact his workshop has it all, Snap on tools, 3 Welders (MIG&TIG), Plasma cutter, press, ramp, pipe bender, air tools you name it and he’s got it.. And what surprised me the most is how organised all the tools are..
I’ve been in a few workshops before and this was probably the one that I found the tools the quickest.. they have a place and are cleaned when put back.. This man loves his workshop.. so much he lives in it!!

The workshop has all sorts of funny pictures, stickers and other things banging around.. I pictured a few.. ๐Ÿ™‚

A fair few projects are waiting for Chez’s magical hands and I found some cool cars too!!

I like this PG/SG very much even the driver looks spot on ๐Ÿ˜‰

There’s no job he doesn’t do.. this beetle needed spaghetti wiring sorting..

Not the most loving job out there but things need to be fixed even if they take a while..

I didn’t take a picture of the actual result but it looked very much like this one .. ๐Ÿ˜‰ย

And when a job needs to be finished it needs to be finished!

It often means working late nights too..

As you can see from yourself, if even late nights weren’t enough . .. OI.. Picture.. WHAT!!!?? ย  ย  ย  lol

And he makes for a good call service too ๐Ÿ™‚

All in all a great experience to be at RRR!!

So if your car’s in need of maintenance, welding or a new (re)build engine give Chez a call. You can find his details here.

Not much of a big post as I was mostly sorting out bits under the van that weekend despite having a great weekend with me buddies..

The SSVC vs the Early bay line up.. ย (moody sky included ๐Ÿ™‚ )

The SSVC Line up in the morning, most likely the best Line up at the whole show.. ๐Ÿ™‚

The privilege of owning a Highroof – center of attention.. ย  ย lol

No idea how this happened ๐Ÿ˜‰ but I was trying to get a good shot from the mini hippy split rather then a bumshot!

As mentioned above, a small post as I was mostly under the bus during the weekend trying to figure out why the performance of my brakes and steering have reduced..
(These are not my pictures, if the owner of these pictures would like me to remove them then please contact me)

I realised at Busfest that since my bus is on the road (april/may 2010) it has done approx 35k miles.. hence why it needs maintenance all the time.. at least it feels like that.

Skeeeeg Veegaaaasss!!

What a superb show!!

I spoke to the organiser at Bugjam and he convinced me this show was a really laidback one on a grass field near to Skegness. My buddy Scotty and his crew were heading out there as well so on friday we cruised up there..
The weather wasn’t great but it couldn’t beat us down except for us all to hiding in the buses..

The location is a nice country field with trees and so we found a great spot to park..

Mr James’s bus didn’t cooperate well and so he took his T? and made it after all.. a bit grumpy to start with ๐Ÿ™‚

Alcohol does wonders.. and after a few I got trigger happy to the (dis) likes of Scotty .. ๐Ÿ™‚

Jay’s superb Volksrod!

On saturday there was the rust and prime line up in the middle of the field with some nice cars!

The ususal suspects having a stroll..

Rikki’s old bus

Not sure where this belongs to tho.. ?

Went for a little wander around the field and spotted 2 more Highroofs. Yippi’s and Anthony’s!

Mr Weener Gypsy style!!

We had a few showers during the day and I forgot to take the Charcoal of the roof.. Even after setting fire to the BBQ with lots of fuel, we realised we needed something else to get it going.. Scotty had the brilliant idea to get 12v blower out and give the BBQ a little hand.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Saturday night was brilliant with a 1hr set from Visiontech beats.. oh yeah good stuff!!

Unfortunately we didn’t get much of a lie-in as Mr Jay was up early to get his shiny beast ready for the show and shine.. and lucky us he parked so close with his quiet Stinger!! (loud exhaust! ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Scotty said to have a go in the show and shine and strangely enough I followed him .. lol
I even won a prize ! God know’s for what but it was funny! ๐Ÿ™‚

As the weather looked very promising I took the opportunity to open up the roof tent and let it air a bit.. it was quite popular! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lovely cars in the line up!

I loved the interior of this Gia!!

This pictures shows the vibe of the show really well.. relax.. and chill.. ๐Ÿ˜€

The show finished sunday eve and we decided to stick around a bit in the area and went to a campsite in Skegness to have a nice warm shower!!

We were quite a sight at the campsite..

The next eve near the beach in Skeg..

The next morning Scotty and I continued a little trip on the coast line and came to a nice place right at the beach..

Happy times for sure!

Another fantastic weekend and good times with friends!!

Roll on 2014!!

Bug Jam 2013

Having never visited Santa pod and being asked by friends to come out and play I loaded Stella up and left..

Wow, this must be the crapiest show I’ve ever been to .. Chav level 10! and the quality of cars is poor (70% watercooled crap) however the company was superb which made it a great weekend after all!

Scotty was waiting for me at the entrance and guided me through the madness onto the MILK&TWO club camping spot where they kept the only small spot left for Stella.. Cheers Guys!!
The line up on the grass reserved for Milk&two was rather cool with an early slammed Ambulance, DKW, Barndoors, ratrods, super early bay window, slammed early double door, a stunning patina’d oval, a 520HP split double cab and Stella..

After a great party the wake up call can be very hard sometimes ๐Ÿ˜‰

Once Chez is alive.. the bar is open.. ย ๐Ÿ˜€

And he’s always up for a party!

I went to have a look at the drag strip and noticed the below Crew cab which was parked next to me all weekend.. I could not believe my eyes when I saw it taking off.. F*ck me this thing as fast as hell.. It currently has about 520HP and according to the owner he’s got an upgrade awaiting to take it up to approx. 750HP ! ย WOW !!

Bugjam = a big fun fair..

The Hayburner boot.. always a cool setup!

Ned doesn’t only make for a good magazine but he know’s how to entertain people with a skateboard too!

Went on a stroll and spotted some cool rides

This ride looked like it came straight of the the new Mad Max set..
Very cool thing!

This is Seaside Neil’s wicked patina’d Oval!!

Another very nice ride..

This extremely tidy engine bay caught my eye.. well done to the owner for keeping it so clean!

Jo Pro’s SC logo

Backdoor Ben on the move ๐Ÿ™‚

Moody skies..

I don’t think I’ll do a Bug jam again, despite the great company it just doesn’t tick the box for me..

Hessisch Oldendorf 2013

AAaaahhhh man what a blast was this show!!!

I lefthome on the evening of wednesday 29th to meet up with fellow bus owners at dover beachfront where we parked up to get the early boat on thursday morning..
Once landed in Dunkerque we re-grouped and made a convoy of 11 Splitbuses.. this convoy was rather Unique, with a very early bus.. a ’50!! Owned by Dai Watkins and was “thrown” together to make this trip. ๐Ÿ˜€

Further more we had a 51, 52’s, 53’s, 54 sunroof, Single cab, early bullet buses and the hitop..

Chez’s 53 hippyracer and Ben’s 51 ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  Buzz’s 54 sunroof, the green ‘windup’ barndoor and in the back Dai’s 50!

The reason why we had to stop was a overheating engine in Ben’s 51..

Another stunning bus in the comvoy was the 54 deluxe from Graham! ย  ย  ย  ย Scotty’s 52 RHD, Simon’s 56 Pg/Sg and Mike’s 59 RHD.

Half an hour later we were back on the motorway continuing or ever lasting super slow convoy at approx. 45 mph.. We decided to do some shopping before we would go to BBT’s and so we came off the motorway just before going in the Antwerp Kennedy tunnel.

We draw a serious amount of attention at the local supermarket ๐Ÿ˜€

As soon as we tried to get back on the motorway we came to a complete stand still, we didn’t even made it on the motorway. I jumped out of the bus walked on to the motorway and saw a sign : accident – wait at least 1 hour. Damn!! A quick word with the rest of the group and I decided to lead all the buses around via the waaslandtunnel aka “bunnyhole” (konijnepijp) through the center of Antwerp whilst rush hour!!

A few shots made by Mike as I was too busy focussing on not loosing anybody!
Thanx to everybody for cooperating well and making phone calls in between!!

B- routing..

Dai’s ’50 – What a piece of history!!

Rush hour in front of the “konijnepijp” (waasland tunnel), a bit scary with all these expensive things on the road.. 4 lanes going in to 1 and not a single car that would leave you a gap, you literally have to squeeze yourself in.. Nearly impossible to do with a convoy.. BUT we all made it safe and sound! ๐Ÿ™‚

We finally arrived at BBT’s after a 7,5hr drive! The weather had turned from rain to beautiful weather which created the perfect atmosphere amongst loads of VW fans! (pics by BBT)

Plenty of people enjoying the FREE and fantastic BBQ from Bob by the fresh-a-licious catering team.

A great opportunity to see BOB’s own collection, he own’s an amazing car collection!!

We had a great evening meeting lots of old and new friends..

Early birds in the morning enjoying the lovely breakfast continued with the start of the convoy to Hessisch Oldendorf.

Because we had such a long drive to Antwerp we decided to have a lay in and skip the cruise in the morning so we could drive a little faster and don’t have to stop all the time.. ๐Ÿ™‚

A few pictures of the cruise..

Alan Scott’s (Scotty) 52 RHD – the oldest RHD on the road!

Chez William’s 53 – He used to race this bus down the strip!

We catched up with the BBT convoy.. and over took them.. ๐Ÿ˜€

Vrooaaammm.. we were having a steady cruise at ยฑ 75 mph.. not bad for these old rust buckets.. ๐Ÿ˜€

Saw some very nice cars in the Convoy..

Eventually we over took the whole convoy and arrived about 15mins earlier.. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks to Niels for these nice pictures..

We parked up in the center of the town. Later on the eve they played music down the road and around 3am I called a night..

A very busy and lovely show started early saturday with the center square packed with barndoors

Chez doing what he does best.. ๐Ÿ™‚

Streets packed with early beetles..

Oval windows everywhere..

Streets filled with buses too ๐Ÿ™‚

Another Highroof!! Jari from Finland came down and drove about 2000km to get there..

A lot of very nice early buses!

One of the highlights of the show were the schwimmwagens..

They all went to the local river and gave a little demonstration.. impressive to say the least!!
I met a family from Singapore together with a friend of them, all VW heads (they have some split buses and even a kombi restaurant – Kombi rocks) and gave them a lift to the river, they enjoyed it a lot.ย If you read this, I hope to meet you again some time!!

Having some good times on the ferry crossing ourselves..

Sunday eve most people had left back home but we decided to stay on the campsite and had a nice warm shower ๐Ÿ™‚

Cool as pick up!

A nice chat and round up of the show with good friends before we took an early night and drove back to Belgium the next morning..

What a great weekend!!!

Cheers to everybody I met at the show..

Good times!!
